Licitar Hearts – Zagreb Souvenir
“Licitar” is a colourfully decorated biscuit produced in various forms, most commonly in the shape of hearts, horses, horseshoes and the like. It traditionally comes in a bright red colour and is used as a Christmas tree decoration.
The tradition of licitar began in the Middle Ages. The custom in which a young man gives a licitar heart to a girl as a symbol of his love and affection is firmly embedded in Croatian culture and is still alive today. Licitar-making was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage on 15 November 2010.
The licitar motif is used in the creation of beautiful licitar heart pendants, available in silver or gold, as well as on earrings, bracelets or cufflinks.
The licitar heart is one of the most recognisable souvenirs from the Zagreb area, which is why our gold and silver licitar hearts are a gift of timeless value.
