Natural pearls are those formed in either salty or fresh waters, without any human intervention. Today are cultivated through special pearl farming processes. Such cultivated pearls keep growing over a period of up to several years.
It takes two years after the initial implantation for a pearl to form. Oysters often do not survive the process or reject the implanted tissue. Only about 30% of oysters manage to successfully form a pearl, of which only 10% are usable and only 3% are are perfectly round. A perfect shape, colour, structure, surface texture and gloss are featured on only about 0,5%.
