The term “filigree” comes from the Latin “filum” (“thread”) and “granum” (“grain”). Filigree jewelry is made from thin strands of gold or silver, which bend and overlap in various ways and can be combined to create complex patterns. Tiny metal beads are also added on occasion. Master jewelry-makers invest hours and hours of work in creating a single piece of this type of jewelry. In Croatia, the filigree technique is a trademark of jewelry from Dalmatia. Buttons, clips, brooches, pins and clasps were mandatory elements of a girl’s dowry in Dalmatia.
Even today, filigree jewelry is considered an original and precious gift that combines the spirit of tradition with modern trends.
